I've just come back from a tour of the US on PR4 Trails and they are superb tires. 8500 kilometres and only a tiny little bit of squaring off on the front, the rear is just fine. I was loaded to the hilt. They were obviously great on road but were okay in gravel, wet gravel, a bit of sand (carefully), and relatively wide dirt roads (real dirt). Very confidence inspiring and excellent longevity, especially since the Varadero is so heavy.
The bike had Anakee 3s on it from the previous owner. I liked them a lot, too. It's hard to say if he didn't maintain proper air pressure or if they wore more quickly than the PR4 Trails. I can't see much of an advantage to the Anakees and would buy the PR4 Trails again.
