Thanks Rainer, Gilles and Bernard for your answers! I can't think of anything to add or to disagree.
PS: If anybody needs help planing his trip through GERMANY, especially coming from the south of Europe, please let me know.
As a matter of fact I do.
Shoud I go "the classical way" Mulhouse-Karlsruhe-Frankfurt or should I rather go up to Metz-Saarbrucken-Frankfurt?
Should I expect jams around Frankfurt in a Friday afternoon?
Regards,
Josep
<sorry for intrusion: this post have been splitted from here and the first part of the answer refers to this post> admin explanation
I been twice through Karlsruhe-Mulhouse in last month and there is traffic, Friday evening jams "stau" too. The other route I have not tried, but I am planning off highway route anyway.
P.S. If you need half way stop you know where you can stay
Thanks Jyrki, but we must unbedingt leave home after Thursday 21.00, so we are planning to ride the 1550 km all on Friday, that's why the correct choice of route is critical.
From your exoerience, Metz Saarbrücken should be a bettet choice, then.
Regards,
Josep
Josep, I have not done that road as I was both times going to east. But every time French highways were emptier than German ones...
How are your plans for return?
Probably sleep in Orange on Monday so that we can reach home at lunch time on Tuesday.
Unfortunately we can't have more extended holidays than that.
See you
Josep
Hi,
I am asking for advice on roads from Puttgarden to Winterberg. We would like to skip autobahn.
Does anyone have suggestions?

Choose "sinuous roads" on your GPS
See you
To old GPS, dosent have senic roads
Perhaps some one who have that funktion can send me the track for Garmin
Try to ask meine dicke, he used to live around... he gave me advice from the south...
In GERMANY you should stay at TRIER (oldest city in Germany) for a longer visit.

Believe me it´s worth, I lived nearby !!!
Then you should ride along the river Mosel to KOBLENZ, don´t use any highway. Just follow the Mosel on the Bundesstrasse.
At KOBLENZ (I lived as well here), where the river Mosel meets the river RHEIN it´s worth visting the Deutsches Eck (German Corner) and the fortess "Festung Ehrenbreitstein" at the other side of the river Rhein, which was the fortress-sign against Napoleon saying not further on here at the Rhein is the border.

Then go along the B 413 to HACHENBURG, follow the L 288 to SIEGEN; B 62 to BAD BERLEBURG and then to WINTERBERG.
In this area I did a lot of tours. So I can say you will enjoy it, if you offer the time needed.

There have to be ...ttgarden-winterberg.JPG
Do not know exactly, but Hambourg is a nice town to see ...
How long you have? Will you arrive Lubeck in evening? I would stay over night then in Hamburg.
Hey Nysse,
my recommendation is:
Go via Lübeck, visit there the Holsten Tor, and then direct to Hamburg.
There I studied for 4 years. It's worth visiting. See the "Gewürzhafen", which is near Rödingsmarkt at the harbour. Go over the Köhlbrand Brücke and the back through the old "Elbe Tunnel". Visit the "Hamburger Michel" (church) and have a look at the Reeperbahn (don't stay there, there are a lot of beautiful girls who are "beggin" for your money). You will see there the Star Club (The Beatles did there some performances).
Then go ahead to Lüneburg, which has and old city, and then perhaps some Kim's along the river Elbe before you go South to Celle (both as well known for it's old city).
Passing Hannover there will be some smaller hills (sorry, I'm from the South of Germany where we have real mountains). Take the time to go along the river Weser at Hameln (Rat catcher of Hameln), Holzminden and Höxter where you can stop at the Tonenburg (well known MC-Meeting Place). From there it's only some Kim's to Winterberg where I hopefully meet you.
