Other things to see on Zealand.
South of Roskilde the small village "Gammel Lejre" is located. Gammel Lejre is a very old village with very old houses with tracks back to both the Vikings and the stone age, in the form of tracks from a Viking village and several stone monuments in the area. Close to Gammel Lejre, in Herthadalen (valley), "Land of Legends" are located. Land of Legends is a research center, where you can actually come and live like the stone age people, the iron age people or the vikings did many years ago. I think it's open for visiters too.

This is a village showing the co-operative movements that has been a part of specially danish agriculture and trading since 1866, focused on the period from WWII and forward. The village is build around a former farm, where the buildings now are home for different kind of shops, all equipped like at that time. The houses and buildings in the village are mostly copies build from houses and buildings found around in the area which was build at that time. But some of then, including the church, has in fact been taken down bit by bit from their original location and rebuild in the village! In the village there are some workshops too, where you can see how people lived and worked at that time.

The area is very special because of it's geographical occurrence back at the ice age. The hills in the western area from Vindekilde to Høve, called "Vejrhøjbuen", The Vejrhøj-curve (or "the mountains"
), is formed by a glacier which pushed material up in front of it, leaving the hills and the "Lammefjord" (inlet, that's where the material came from), behind. In 1873 it was desided to build a dyke north of Holbæk and drain the Lammefjord, to get more land to cultivate, as the inlet was just a few meters deep (7 meters at the deepest). But the inlet was big and the draining went on until 1943, before there was no more water within the dyke. The Lammefjord is in fact the biggest drained area in Denmark.

The rest of Odsherred offers a lot of nice places too, e.g. along the coasts with some lovely beaches.
Speaking geology, "Stevns Klint" (cliff), on the east side of Zealand (and a bit more south), is a very special geological area too, and appointed as a Unesco Heritage Site. The cliff is mostly formed by lime and chalk in many layers, with flint among others in between and is the best place in the world to study the after effects from the asteroid that exterminated e.g. the dinosaurs 66 million years ago, mainly because of it's unique layer of so-called "Fish clay". In the cliff and on the beach it's possible to find different kind of fossils.

The fort was build in 1950-53 and was active for 40 years under the cold war. It is in fact carved into the cliff from the water side, to keep it as secret as possible, but has access from the ground 18 meters above. It's mission was to keep an eye on what Russia and it's allied did, as it was the closest point to the east (Sweden was neutral), and the place that would be attacked first in case of war. And because of it's location, the Stevnsfort had direct connection to The White House in Washington!

And he said: of cause, I've always known it and everybody here knows about it, but we didn't say anything!
In that way the Fort has been kept as a secret for most of the danish population for more than 50 years!
