Honda XR650L possibly for sale
« on: October 25, 2014, 22:58:18 »
So, I recently picked up a Varadero. It's going to be my daily rider for the foreseeable future. I'd like to clean it up a bit, resell and move into a newer year model, but going to stick with a Varadero for sure.

I've also got a Honda XR650L that I'm thinking about selling to help with finances. 2008 model, "Dave's mod" to the carb which opens up the throttle response (see advrider or ThumperTalk for full details), K&N filter, 100% synthetic AMSOIL from first oil change, aftermarket 4.7 US gallon (~18 litre) Clarke fuel tank, only 5145 miles on odometer, more aerodynamic front fender installed plus original included, factory tires installed plus unused Dunlop D606 rear included, BarkBusters handguards installed, metal rear disc brake guard installed, custom ridiculously bright LED blinkers and taillight installed, Manracks Super Duty rack installed, probably some other stuff I'm forgetting.

What would that kind of more dirt oriented bike be worth on the market over here? If I price it at the equivalent of US $4500 would that be too high, too low, or about right? It's a damn good bike, and I'd trust it to take me anywhere (more so than my Varadero) but it's not as comfy going to work every day...

But of course,  I should have included them in the original post! It just slipped my mind. This was just before I picked up the Varadero on the way to work one morning. As you can see from the swingarm and muffler, I often take the farmer's "roads" to work, and she ends up needing a bath quite frequently!

Most of my pictures of the bike occur playing tag for the advrider World-Wide tag-o-rama game (fun way to make you ride to new locations.) That's where this one came from - local chateau, translated as castle in English which is slightly funny.

The toolbox on the back would not actually be included. That was an experiment to make commuting more simple, and my larger tools are now scattered on the garage floor waiting for their home again... the Varadero ended up making my commute simpler so now I just need to take a few minutes and do it. ;)

Considering that you can buy Varaderos in fairly good shape for 4500 €, your 4500 $ (=3550 €) seem a bit overpriced at first glance.
Perhaps your low mileage and these extras you mention make it a good deal, I don't know.
There used to be similar models in Europe, namely Dominator 650 (more road oriented) and XR600 (more offroad oriented), which because of time can be found pretty cheap nowadays.

To get familiar with prices, you could check second hand sites, for instance, http://leboncoin.fr (in French) http://www.milanuncios.com/motos-de-segunda-mano/ (in Spanish) http://www.zweitehand.de/fahrzeuge/motorraeder (in German), http://www.autotrader.co.uk/bikes ,...

Good luck,

Josep

Josep - Thanks for the realistic input. Given the extreme similarities between the XR650L and NX650, and the significantly greater availability of the NX650 here, I've searched around a bit on the various sites and determined that you are quite right. What we personally value a motorcycle at is not indicative of the value it holds on the market. Based on my searches today and the condition of my cycle, €2500-3000 seems far more marketable to actually sell quickly. At that price point, I'll just hang onto it and look for some extra work to make up the money instead  ;). I'm really not going to be using it for the next few years, and they're available everywhere back in the US, so that is why I thought of selling it even though I really like it.

Since you are located in Belgium, you clould try the Dutch Transalpclub forum. Weve got several offroad riders amongst our members for whom the bike could be interesting.
