Why not over Alps? Just my comment...

And my question can be : why Champagné? Surely something I do not know ...

ON this point, can agree; later can be better. We have more and more snow each day  VCIF_ok

Not going to Champagne. Thinking of going back via Vienna and then the train to Hamburg. Looking forward discussing routes at VIM.

Did the Champagne on my way to VIM17 in Nant and noticed that the scenery is zo boring...
I would suggested to follow the Vogese mountains on the west Rhinebank, or the Black Forrest in the east.

Do not confound , Oll want to go to ChampagnÉ (west France) a small village I have never heard about, and not Champagne (where we make some famous bubble wine-east France and not far from Vosges)

Champagne valley is not far from Paris.

We drove through when came to Winterberg, in miserable rain all the way to Verdun...

The actual "Champagne route":

Unfortunately the Picos are cancelled due to work, it would add a 2.000km detour (incl the local routes). On our way up to Andorra we'll do Brettany, St Michel, the Carnac allingement and Bordeaux. On our way back we are open for suggestions.

@Zebulon

How are the roads from Sondrio-Sestriere-Gap
https://goo.gl/maps/hZPHFQ1a2ru

Is it worth taking those smaller curvy ones or should we stick to the shorter, faster and straighter ones?

@ Magnus (and others)

From Briançon I will take smaller, curvier and most beautiful col d'Izoard to go to Guillestre (if open of course) ! Then col de Vars is a nice option (you can have some others too) .
I think it's a crime if you do not go to see Bonette pass from Jausiers; you can just do an up and down ; but it is one of the best (IMO). a lot of choices of alpines tracks around (but not sure it is easy if you have luggages, and we cannot knos how will be the snow ...
After Turin sure it is a little bit boring ... but ii a long way as this, you surely have some.

Thank you Gilles for advice.
We will see what timetable will say. Quite stuffed days to travel through the Alps to reach Pyrenees in 6 days
