I simply don´t get it.

If I pay 3,62 €, will my Varadero then get more environmentally friendly?

Where and when do I need it?

Is it something we all need, no matter where in France we go?

It´s mainly described as being some bigger towns thing, does that include the highways in these towns too (e.g. Lyon)?

Please explain so that everyone understands what it´s all about and what´s needed!

P.S.: this should have been announced a long time ago, so that we all had had a chance to discuss it and familiarize ourselves with it!

In the ZPA areas (the minority, Paris, Grenoble etc). Most vehicles (but in many areas not bikes) will need a vignette to drive anywhere in these areas at any time .

In ZCR Areas restrictions will only come into effect on days when the pollution levels are high. You will then need a Vingette depending on the level of pollution and the type of vehicle.

Looking at the first (unofficial) website I cant see any ZCR areas that require a bike to have a vingette today. I suspect it will take a few weeks of warm weather before restrictions start to be applied.

The majority of France does  is not  (yet) either ZPA or ZCR

https://umap.openstreetmap.fr/de/map/frankreichalle_147000?#6/49.110/3.472

We plan to travel down through the west side of France and we can (with small excursions) go the whole way without entering a ZPA or ZCR zone.

We will not be applying for Vingettes.

If anyone has a better explanation or can see that I have got any of this wrong please say so.

SB

As I had it explained yesterday it is when large cities have smog you need this vignette.

Advice is that police is not so active hunting foreign mc's without it.

Just another EU France stupidty

First you have to go to the official site to ask for your vignette the cost is "only" 3,62€ (4,51€ with fee cost outside France); official sites are with DOT gouv DOT fr; you have a lot of other site with official -gouv etc which ask up to 20€ or more.
Then just make your ask, notice I've never needed it, they only use 1 or 2 times the year in Paris ; but it is better to have it .  ;)
