French regulation - helmets reflective stickers
« on: June 20, 2014, 13:45:14 »
All bikers in France, whether residents or visitors, to wear a helmet with reflective stickers on, and this one has not been scrapped. Bikers caught wearing a helmet without stickers may face a 135 euros fine payable on the spot and 3 points taken off their licence. The police have recently been enforcing this rule quite severely in Paris and other locations throughout France.

All helmets must have four reflective stickers: one on the front, one at the rear and one on each side. The surface of each sticker must be 18 cm2 and, within each sticker, you must be able to draw a 40 mm diameter circle, or a 12.50 cm2 rectangle with a minimum of 20 mm length, as shown on the below picture.

The vehicle whose driver motor runs without wearing a helmet approved type or without the helmet is attached can be immobilized !!!

Be careful: one on the front, one each side, and one on the rear

The French traffic department has even more up on their sleeve... Q is, is it according to EU laws. As EU resident, the French police might stop you, but can not force you to pay a fine right away. This law is obligatory in all EU member states and for al EU citizens.

Problem is if you visiting France coming from outside the EU...
Frankly I can't see a police officer pressing charges on an unknowing tourist for these nonsenses...

I would worry more about the strict rules on having fixed speed cameras as POI in your satnav, where it doesn't matter if the option is switched on- or off. Fine = 1.500€ and your satnav is impounded.

What effect will those stickers have in daylight?

In country you don't need to have lights on at all during daylight?

I once learned that you should never put stickers on your helmet because the glue could cause a chemical reaction With the plastic and damage the helmet.

@Pixi314 That was in the 80's when plastic helmets and glue had the same chemical structure, based on same base: oil. Glue could soften the plastic and you could felt that with your fingers and like building with clay, you could form your plastics.

Plastic helmets are today not really plastic, mix of carbon fibre and glue on stickers also have evovolved into the better. So nothing to worry about or say to the police.

Where is the problem to put these stickers on your helmet?

I have them mounted on my Schubert C2 (silver) => you can´t see them at daylight.
Only if you get flashed or in the night when spotlighted.

The only place for stickers are my alu H&B panniers.

Stickers, or sowing-up-badges, are OFF-LIMITS on either my motorcycle gear, or my bike.  :-*

I think Pixie's right. My Everoak Racemasters and Pudding Basin race helmet were GRP so not what  you would call 'plastic'. I think it was more complicated than solvents but light degradation and uneven ageing. The manufacturers might have to capitulate with the EU.
I'm with TP on this one.

Sounds like the stickers are only for improved radar reflectivity....not for "safety" as most kilometers are travelled in the daytime. Apparently they don't think they are getting enough hits on "stealth" motorcycles.
If they want to create income, then why not mandate a chip/transponder in every vehicle that automatically downloads the speed, route etc

@Skye
Do you mean no mandatory daytime running lights in France?

Off Topic:
Recent incident here. Two vehicles behind a motorcycle. Second vehicle pulled out to pass both car and bike in front. The first car also pulled out and hit the car passing from behind. One of the car drivers went into a swamp and was hospitalized. Rider & bike not hurt.
The driver was quoted that he had to pass because the bike was travelling "just" below the speed limit (100kph). I guess he had to say that for the insurance claim!

Sure with a little search on google you can find (for those who wants ...) (in french auto-collants / casque)

here is a place I've bought my Red stickers you've seen on my top case, panniers & helmets ...
http://stores.ebay.fr/ADHESIF-PUB-DECORATION-SIGNALETIQUE?_trksid=p2047675.l2563

Note my wife had not her stickers on her previous helmet and we had not any problem for some years...

You have to know & decide ...  ;)
