2008 XL1000 dead
« on: December 30, 2017, 13:53:46 »
Hi. Any ideas about this. I rode my 2008 XL1000 to work like normal. I stopped at the bike parking and switched it off to look for a spot I could fit in. After re positioning a couple of scooters who had parked like dickheads as usual i jumped back on and went to start the bike. I got lazy and didn't put it in neutral but pulled in the clutch and hit the start button. The bike turned over very lazy like and made a clicking noise I guess you would call it and didn't start . I stopped straight away. I then put it in neutral and found that the bike was dead when I again hit the start button. The battery is not very old. I still had HISS light flashing and power to my heated grips. The dash was completely blank except for the clock. When I turn on the ignition key the oil light and neutral light slowly light up but very dim. I have just put a battery charger on and it says battery is full. When I hit the start button now whilst  the charger is on the battery all i get is a loud buzz coming from somewhere near the battery. The fuses are all OK. Im guessing that when I tried to start it with the clutch in something has burnt out. Regulator?rectifier maybe. Any help appreciated. The bike has never missed a beat till this. :-\

It could a bad connection somewhere between the battery and the starter but I dont think so.

It sounds very much like a battery problem.

The best (easiest) way to check is to find someone with a good 12v battery and a set of jump leads. If the bike starts OK with jump leads then the battery is dead.

Do the headlights get dimmer when you press the starter button and hear the buzzing noise ?

Just do what SB is telling you. Find a "good" battery to test it.
A battery may be defect even if you can charge it and even if the lights in the speedometer are on.
But if you stress the battery with the starter, the battery will collapse (brake down).

It's the battery 99%. The 1% remaining is a loose connection at the battery terminals.

The buzzing noise is the starter relay, it does this when the battery is dead.

The battery is a collection of cells all holding 12 volts. What you need is the Amps, i.e. the battery's ability to generate cranking power.
This only works if all the cells are functioning. You need to have the battery tested for ampage not voltage. A battery seller or your dealer can test this for you but I'm betting one or more cells are dead. You still get 12 volts showing after charging but the power of the battery is minimal. The age of a battery is immaterial.
Sorry because they aren't cheap to replace.

My money would be on the battery as others have said. They are very fickle and that is why warranty doesn't cover them .
