Hello Ladies and Gents

I recently got a dead Honda XL 400 V Transalp and I am planning to bring it back to life. Upon my research I have decided to swap the engine with a 650 cc one because I can see its very difficult to get parts for the 400 one since it was only sold in Japan and there are not so many in Europe where we import parts from. I am in Kenya.

I was wondering if there is someone who has undertaken such a project and if yes they can share some experiences with me.

I am happy to learn from the best.

Thanks '
Denis

Hello Denis,

welcome to the family!

Well, even if there is much much bike knowledge and experience here, I don't remember reading about anything like that here.
Replacing one engine with one that delivers more power is always compromising in terms of brakes, frame,..., unless the bike was actually designed for the big engine, which might well be the case for a TA (in short, that the Japanese 400 was done by just replacing the 600 cc engine by a 400 cc and leaving everything else unchanged).

I am also member of a French forum, and I have seen there a few examples of old bikes brought back to life. Maybe you could find additional advice in places like that.

Good luck and congratulations for the bike, and the place where it will be ridden!
