Travelling to VIM
« on: November 14, 2022, 13:21:07 »
My plan for driving to and from VIM across the UK is as follows:

I think there are many interesting points that I skip because I don't know them.
Maybe the British can help me and give me tips on where to go along the route.

Thanks in advance
and greetings from southern Germany

Looking at your previous schedule If you are staying overnight in Huddersfield on the 11th.

Early start on the 12th, Travel via Harrogate, Rippon and then onto the A684 across the North Yorkshire Moors then the A683 to Heysham.

Thank you Stewart,

the route via Harrogate / Ripon seems to be long and ferry check-in is till 13:30 hrs.
What do you think about Huddersfield to Skipton and then B6265 / B6160 to A684 and then along your proposed route across the North Yorkshire Moors then the A683 to Heysham.

I only can´t assess if the B-Road is OK for travelling (never had been at UK).

Those B roads would be OK.  There wont be much traffic and you should be able to make good progress.

Martyn, Dave or others who are more local might have better suggestions  I live a lot further North and only visit there occasionally.

If possible I would look at travelling a bit further north on the 11th so you can spend more time on the moors.

Rainer,
From Huddersfield to Heysham is about 2 hours if you head north for Keithley and pick up the A65. A687 and then the A683.
This puts you at the south end of the Yorkshire Dales (not Moors!). It's a scenic enough ride with plenty of places for a coffee stop.
Any diversion into the Dales will put you on single carriageway roads and eat into your time. I am conscious that you have to be at Heysham by 1.30pm at the latest.
If you are an early starter then there are a couple of places to visit. Skipton Town, Malham or Ribble Head Viaduct. All can be done by looping off the A65 and back again.
Don't miss the ferry!!

Thank you Martyn.

With what you have written and Stewart has told my plan from Huddersfiel to Heysam is for the moment:

This takes 2 hrs 45 min (approx 3 hrs). If I start at 0900 I shall arrive at the ferry at 1200.
AND I travel through the MOORS.
The B-roads (B6265, B6160, B6255) are, as I have seen/checked with google earth, 90% dual lane or am I wrong?

What do you think about my plan.

Thanks again for your help.

Greetigs from the South of Germany

Rainer, your map says it all, YORKSHIRE DALES NATIONAL PARK!!
Seems a good route. Stop in Hawes if you can for a coffee at the biker cafe at the west end of town.
Ribblehead is a great photo opportunity.
Second half is a much faster route.

Good luck and see you at VIM.

Last summer we went next to Hawes, to see Hardraw Force ( http://hardrawforce.com England's tallest waterfall and a filming location for Kevin Costner's Robin Hood).
A few years ago we rode to nearby Tan Hill Inn, England's highest Inn, and a nice route IMO. http://tanhillinn.com

See you,

Josep

Good choice.

The Green Dragon Inn https://greendragonhardraw.com/ (next to the Hardraw falls) and the Tan Hill Inn are both popular stopovers for the UK Varadero group.

Unfortunately the Green Dragon Inn is currently closed, hopefully it will open again next Spring.

Thank you @ Josep and @ Stewart,

I updated my plan. It takes only 10 min to ride to the falls and back. The stay I can handle when I know what time I have.
The Tan Hill Inn is to far, so I shall skip it.

Greetings from the South of Germany

Edit: And thank you @ Martyn for your positive evaluation of my routing.

As long as you do not expect too much, these falls are a nice sight. Well kept by their owners, who ask for a fee. You get there through their café  :D
In this not too populated part of England I remember rides in a nice scenery. It is no Norwegian fjell or alpine pass, but pleasant anyway.  :)

See you,

Josep

I can see you may be going to Grassington. Just like we did last summer.
Are you too an "All creatures great and small" fan?  ;D
