Title: Pitting on spokes
Post by: MrKiwi on December 12, 2016, 02:32:05
My AT has about 1200 kms on the clock and I've owned it just over 6 weeks.

Sadly, the spokes on the gold rim wheels are pitting. They are smooth on the back side of the spokes, but rough as guts on the front leading edge.

I discussed this with the NZ Distributor on Friday, as I was holding a NZ industry motorcycle meeting in their offices. They will replace the spokes, but I'm in no rush. I don't think we get the new wheels and spokes until 2017, although Japan Honda is already making them with their new and 'improved' process.

That's good to hear. I was hoping mine would too, but sadly not. However, I will be looked after by the distributor.

The spokes on my AT are crap. Just two months old and rusting out...

I managed to slow down the rate of deterioration using a spray on oil. The distributor recommended I spray the oil on a cloth an then wipe the spokes. Been working well.

Honda have let them self down big time the more this is spread through the media the better, even guys who have been sent the replacement 2017 spokes double dipped are still getting problems so maybe time to dump the AT and get a Yamaha or triumph lol

Almost did, the S10, but the length of the rider and pillion seat is not quite as long as the AT's. And more importantly it didn't have a DCT gearbox, which I wanted.

As for pitting on the spokes, the problem has not progressed due to the oil treatment I give it. It's a bit of pain, but if the spokes do deteriorate then the NZ Honda distributor will take care of me.

Checked my bike again for pitting on the spokes and found the rear wheel is good, but the front wheel is not quite so good. So not only does it look like the problem varies from bike to bike, it also appears it varies from wheel to wheel. Weird!

During the 12k service I also made complaints about pitting on the spokes.

My dealer made up a warranty claim and normally at the end of the summer when it's more quiet at my dealers the spokes will be replaced.

In Belgium only people who complain get a warranty claim.
Honda will not replace the spokes unless you ask.

Are they being replaced with improved spokes

The dealer says so. Let's hope for it.
I saw an official paper from Honda stating that Honda is giving the dealer 7.75h to change the spokes on both front and rear wheel.

Will every dealer have the "competence" to replace and adjust the spokes correctly ?

In Germany most of the dealers, not to say all of them, have a associated garage.
Therefore they have no problems with.
