I certainly wouldn't want to have to rely on the Honda supplied tool kit supplied with the CRF1000L to save my neck on a trip!.  It doesn't even have a spanner (wrench) to allow you to adjust the chain, let alone remove a wheel to fix a flat!
In a nutshell.... It's crap!  It's still as bad as the one supplied with my Varadero back in 2003!
No improvement there, that's for sure. :(

So, I had a poke through Amazon.com and came up with a basic starter kit and ordered the following:
I tried adding links but failed, so included just the titles which you can search on.

Basic Metric Tool kit

Motion-Pro-08-0161-Multi-Purpose-Metric Tool Kit
  • Includes convenient carrying case
  • Can be used to remove 8, 10, 12 and 14 millimeter bolts, #2 and #3 Phillips screws, small and medium straight slot screws and 5 and 6 millimeter Allen bolts
  • Includes a 1/4 inch and 3/8 inch socket driver
  • 10 millimeter , 12 millimeter and 1/4 inches drive sockets included
  • Enhance it by adding your own 1/4 inhes or 3/8 inches drive socket attachments

Plus Add:

For rear wheel (27mm - right side)

Motion Pro 08-0541 27mm and 12/13mm T-6 Combination Tire Lever/Wrench Set

For rear wheel (22mm left side) and also front wheel (22mm)

Motion Pro 08-0286 10" T6 Combo Lever 22mm

For front wheel - (17mm Hex)

Motion Pro 08-0355 T6 Superlight Hex Axle Tool 17,19,22,24 mm

.....and you'll be on your way to a decent starter tool kit.

Add other bits as you think of them.

Than try to call to the insurer on Saturday evening as you'll be in the mountains or, for example in Poland :-)

I can remember having problems three times. Two punctures in the UK and one problem with car brake in France.
In all cases, bank notes were the tools I used. My skills don't allow me much more than that  ::)

Well, if the AT holds the same high Honda standard as the Varadero (which I believe it does), then you don´t need the toolkit, so, just throw it away!  ;D

Having no tools is not a good idea unless you're near to services. You never know what might happen, as I found out one day to my detriment. I'm mechanically challenged most of the time but I now carry a small tool kit in addition to the one that comes with the bike. I'm hearing the AT  tool kit is a bit skimpy at best.

In my case I needed to tighten some bolts that had worked loose after several days of gravel running on my CT. The CT tool kit did not have the right tools for me to do the job and I couldn't ride further without doing the work. Luckily one of my riding buddies has some good tools with him. The problem - I was out of cell phone range to ring anyone!

I was just joking  ;D, of cause it´s always a good idea to bring some tools. But, having said that, I´ve now done 122000 km on my Varadero, and I´ve never had the chance to try the original tool kit out on the road  VCIF_ThumbUp

Or out on the logging trails on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada, with no mobile phone (cell) reception.  No road side assistance or $$$ will help you there!   That's why we ride in pairs when planning to head out of range of the usual recovery services or cell towers.

From this post I conclude you made the purchase of a toolkit... surrounded by an CRF1000, James?  VCIF_ThumbUp

It been a while since I was here.. so catching up on posts.

I thought I was going to order at new AT last year (2016), so was stocking up on Tools that specifically fit the CRF1000L.  Once I had researched what was needed (over and above the doubtful Honda supplied tool kit.. if indeed they remember to add one at the factory!) I though I should share what I had decided upon.

However, our house needed a new roof, eeek!  So the new bike was on hold last year.  New Roof now fitted and paid for.  Since then I have been riding my Triumph Tiger 1050.  Nice bike, but not for me in the long term.   So about three weeks ago I ordered a New 2017 AT DCT in Rally Red Colour Scheme.
So far, back at home waiting to install, I have Bumot Panniers, Bark Busters, RockFox Crash bars (Upper and Lower), Honda Centre Stand.  Plenty more ideas of what needs to go on from an electronics point of view but that will come eventually.

My new bike is now at the bike shop still in its shipping crate with my name on the outside! The only problem I have right now is I am over 5500km away and 345km off the East Coast of Canada!  Due home early August.   Then I'll get my new Africa Twin on the road! :)
