Hello from Cordoba
« on: August 06, 2014, 15:24:00 »
Hello all from Cordoba (SPAIN)

I've just joined this forum about my first fork oil leaks after 55k riding my Varadero.
And I've been analyzing the problem and asking myself:

- The Maximum Hidraulic Pressure reached inside the system when the Forks are totally pressed (155 mm total travel) is directly related to the initial volume of air (oil level when filling 115mm, equivalent to 40 cm3) forced to a reduced final volume.

- Making an initial comparison between those figures, I reckon the final pressure will be as high as I never thought before (I have been doing motorbikes maintenance for more than 40 years).

- I have examined the oil seal design and I suspect ... that it is weak for that heavy duty operation.

- In power hydraulic equipment a stronger designs are used (like in common hydraulic actuators in bulldozer ),

- Are we in a programmed obsolescence case? another time? even in Honda?

I will gauge the actual pressure inside the forks, while riding... I will tell you more...

Hello Cordobes. Welcome to this family.

Perhaps you should post your problem in the technical section of the forum.

Anyway, I can't remember anyone having oil leaks from his forks. As a matter of fact, mine have 191000 km and so far no leak whatsoever.
I don't think there's programmed obsolescence in our Varas. Their known problems have nothing to do with premature wear, and I'd rather say that clutches, gears,... are pretty tough.

Greetings,

Josep

Hello Cordobes
I moved your posting from out Admin perspective to avoid getting your technical Q lost, pls feel free to make a new welcome post.

Regarding to the leaking front fork seals: it is a known problem. The best advice is to change the standard Honda seals for thicker and stronger after-market ones, and mount front fork gaiters (like on Transalp 600 and Africa twin 750) on them to protect the seals from impact by dirt, dead insects, etc.

We have an excellent 'search' option in the right top corner of this Forum. I found this topic which can be helpful solving your problem:
