how much W can i draw
« on: May 18, 2014, 23:30:49 »
how much power can i draw for electric accessory before hitting the over lode point?

I'm thinking of installing the Rigid dually D2 led lights. these lights draws about 70w for a pair.
i also have heated grips and a cellular input.

To be honest, it depends on the regulator/rectifier pack as that's what takes the strain when your engine is running.
I would imagine Honda build in a certain amount of extra capacity with the electrical system and the lights you've mentioned will draw 5.8 amps. 70w/12v. Honda technical help might give you a maximum load on the system if you contact them.
Good luck.

I've added:
- heated grips 48W (max)
- 2 sw motech Hawk foglights of 55W each
- extra power output
- gps in permanent charged dock

And had no problems whatsoever (knock on wood)  :)

are you satisfied with the sw motech Hawk fog lights?

i found the stoke light a bit shorty and looking for lights that will illuminate farther and wider

I've NOT installed them to have a better light forward but simply to be seen more clearly by other traffic in dark and bad wheather conditions. Have used them only once for that purpose until today. There are lots of lights for sale but I found this set attractive because of their construction (cast aluminium housing), looks and price.

According to Haynes the output from the alternator is 315 W at 5000 rpm.

Well, you´re (almost, I think ;D), right about that.

At first I just looked up in my Haynes and it only said 315 W, as if it was all models...afterwards looking in my Owners Manual (2008 ABS), this said 434 W at 5000 rpm.

But...looking at the partnumbers, model `99, `00, `01 and ´02 all have the same Stator and Flywheel, this must be the 315 W model.

From 2003 both Stator and Flywheel have other partnumbers, I asume this is the 434 W model, comming together with the introduction of the PGM-FI.

The ABS model is introduced in 2004, with the same Stator and Flywheel as in 2003 on both models; with and without ABS. So, the more powerfull Alternator must be because of the fuel injection, not because of the ABS.

From 2007 the Flywheel have a third partnumber, but the Stator is the same.
Plan your ride, ride your plan.

So if we take the two figures given for max wattage, we get 315w/12v = 26.25A or 434w/12v = 36.1A.
Just remember those max figures are generated at >idle, so if you've got all your additional electrical equipment switched on and you are sitting with engine on tick over, your battery will be taking the strain not the alternator/dynamo/charging system.

sorry for my ignorance but that output is not only for accessory,

shouldn't we take of the the amount of W's that the motorcycle consume???

Yes. As those figures are for maximum load, you would have to take off the usual motorcycle current consumption. Instruments, ignition system, fuel pump, trip computer, etc.

Just to keep watts down. I'm using 2 by 10 W but seeing a a Honda XBR500 had Krista Led lights and that is even worse output. Krista light system has its price but also effect...

22W, 22W+22W+8W, 22W+22W+36W, 22W+22W+72W

The normal, low beam LED light.

Low beam plus high beam LED light

Low beam plus high beam light plus Kristas at lowest dimming setting

Low beam plus high beam light plus Kristas at 50% power

Low beam plus high beam light plus Kristas at full power. 116 W LED power equivalent to some estimated 400 W halogen output. Bambi, beware!

Pricetag is about $800 but comparing to 55x2 H2 it is a slight difference. 6 watts more outtake from the xtra 55x2 and this is what you can get.
