Tried local Honda dealer and he wants $50 for a paper air filter for my '08 Vara.

Any suggestions for on-line suppliers?  This model wasn't sold in the USA so a lot of on-line suppliers don't have a listing for it's parts.

That's about what I paid a couple years ago from a dealer in Vancouver for my 08.
aviciouscycle.ca is the Canadian arm of Twisted throttle and they list a K&N for $71.
I've also bought some Varadero specific items from adventuremotorcycleparts.com, but Honda OEM parts will likely be dealer only.

Chain, sprockets, tires I've had no problem getting from the usual places as in motorcycle superstore, or Revzilla, Powersport junkies or even Amazon..

As Jokern said European sites may be best but shipping may kill you.

I bent my front wheel bad, a Varadero isn't really a dirt bike now is it, $800 or so from Honda Canada, nothing used of course, or 150 euros used from overseas... I had it straightened for $150.

I'm also lucky I live 20 mins away from the border and get stuff shipped to Blaine and bring it across myself. No courier brokerage fees and very rarely have to pay any duty or tax. Map says you're in Cranbrook so even getting out of the U.S. may not be economical for you.

Good luck

HiFlo is a very good replacement for the original.

I google hiflo filter Canada and among others http://www.aviciouscycle.ca/mainpages/productList.aspx?brandid=42
If they sell Hiflo oil filters, they should also get the air filters....or if you find any others.

Hiflo partnumber is HFA1922 for your bike.

I simply can't understand why anyone is using the original Honda paper filters which have to be replaced every 6.000/12.000 km.

Get a K&N or BMC replacement. They are durable and washable and the K&N even comes with a 1.000.000 km warranty.

I don't really have a strong opinion one way or the other, but there is a large school of thought that consider K&N and other oily filters inferior to OEM paper for actual filtration.

It's kinda like asking what's the best oil.. :)

Large school = HONDA School? ;)
Obvious... spending only about 75/80 Euro only once for a K&N or BMC which also improves performance, or 45,- every 12.000 km for the OEM Honda filter...
I have been using these on all my previous bikes and have runned Varadero's for several thousants of kilometres without any problem. Also in rahter dusty circumstances!

We all know the disasters that occur when removing the gas tank to get at the air filter ...so why not use the K&N that offers a longer life between services  ... plus you'll get a free sticker!

Here's some parts that I've bought:

K&N Air Filter # HA-1003   Vicious Cycle    62.99 ( + some other bits)
HiFlo Oil Filter # HF-204   Local bike shop    8.49
Chain DID ZVMX 525 Gold   Motowheels.com    185.95
EBC Front Brake Pads EBC FA388HH   Canadas Motorcycle    107.23

Twisted Throttle and Vicious Cycle are ok if you have a larger / bike specific order ...but their shipping cost can be very high
Otherwise, the local bike shops can scrape together most bits such as chain-sets etc

There are occasional good deals on US sites but shipping and or duties can hurt ...just need to look carefully
I assume you know about using USPS rather than UPS, FedEx etc.

In the swedish warrantybook replacement is every 18,000 kms. Propably you can ride a little bit more. Some people who don´t ride much on dirty roads some times blows the dust of and get out some more kms(no, I replace it)

KN or HiFlo? It depends how much you ride in a year?

Important is to note, you really cant have both open exhaust and open filter(K&N) without adjusting the injection/carb

V Saarala ... How does one go about adjusting fuel injection on the Varadero?

I have a Leo Vince exhaust and am installing a K&N air filter this year.  I'm averaging 4.3 liters/100 kms fuel mileage with the stock paper filter and the exhaust.

@trex

Wow! 4.3l/100km ...do you have any fun on the bike? ;D ;D

I have Leo Vince exhaust (with baffles in - see photo) and K&N air filter
I have no idling or throttle problems ...I guess the electronic brain will adjust fuel mixture within certain limits
If I ride very smooth & steady I can average ~4.5 l/100km  and say 90-100kmh ....but that is very boring so I may drop a gear or two in the twisties to have a little fun. You can see my long term average below ~5.3 l/100km

P.S. If you get a K&N filter don't be tempted to over-oil it after cleaning ...follow their instructions

Getting a K&N from Vicious Cycle along with some oil filters and brake pads.

Getting 4.3l/100kms is nice when doing big km days (nice to fill up half as often as my riding buddies),
although mileage can differ greatly when having more fun ;)
