Honda NC750X DCT
« on: June 21, 2014, 00:03:08 »
I bought a Honda NC750X DCT two weeks ago and thought I should say a few words about it here. To put my comments in context, first some background.
Over the past 10 years or so I’ve done over 120,000 km riding in Europe (N to S = Norway to Morocco and W to E + Wales to Greece). All with plenty of Adventure and without leaving tarmac.
The ravages of aging forced the sale of my Blackbird which finally became too much for the old wrists and I also found that I did not use it’s awesome power and speed any more. Some years ago I had a Varadero XL1000 and wanted to get back to the upright posture again.

I have done nearly 2,000 km on my NC750X now, riding the wonderful roads of Wales and can say that I’ve found it 100% to my liking. From a touring perspective, it has more than adequate power and torque. 80 mph at 4,000rpm or 90 mph at 4,500rpm - so no shortage of pace for distance touring. I’ve had a number of extras fitted before taking delivery of which the MRA vario screen is undoubtedly tops for comfort. The DCT (automatic) is simply fantastic. Mind you, I mainly use the “Sport” setting as the “Drive” setting is not very exciting. What impresses me most is how it gears down in exactly the same way I would normally have geared down. It also means that you need not worry about hitting the rev limiter. Just open the throttle and she revs to the limit and then performs a silky smooth instantaneous upshift. This will seriously bring some welcome relief to my left hand when doing 10 hour days, day after day, when on tour. I also find the handling excellent, very light and well balanced with low centre of gravity. And all for relatively little money. I look forward to doing another trip to the Alps soon.
Always heading for the mountains.

I had the chance to test the DCT system myself, on a CrossTourer, and found that the little dwarfs inside handled the clutch very, very well. ;D

I am interested in reading what you say about your bike, which at first glance seems much more biased to fuel economy than to performances. But in the end, the most important factor is fun.

Greetings,

Josep

I also test rode the CrossTourer DCT and liked it very much indeed but at the end of the day had to make a decision. I was of course influenced by my age (now 62) For CrossTourer: Power and shaft drive. For NC750X: very light weight, enough power and speed for touring (for me anyway). Half the price.  ;D
Always heading for the mountains.
