I was saying you can do it yourself without spending all that money. Find a correct size spare reservoir and make a bracket for it... I saw somewhere in the forums a homemade solution.

Well yes you can and if I wanted it just for a couple of trips that would work well. And if I ride only one up this would work too.

But I need it for distance touring two up. I won't have room other than inside the left pannier bracket. Hence my interest in the Camel product. The placement of the fuel down low helps as well. My view is I can probably afford the Camel solution so that is what I am likely to opt for. For my general riding I find stopping every 300 kms a hassle. A personal preference thing.

This is the Camel-ADV tanks as fitted to the Bumot Defender pannier frame.     Took a bit of jiggling to get it installed the way I wanted, but I will say the supplied kit is very well made and the tank has installed solidly.  The tank is a tight fit to the rear Bumot pannier cross bar so I will add some spacers in there to give some extra clearance.   I also needed to grind away some material from the supplied stainless steel mounting bracket, that secures the tank to the bike via clamps, so that the breather hose could pass through correctly.  It was no biggie. 

Overall this is a well made solid product.  My average fuel consumption is 5.1L/100km right now.  Although I will add that I've been taking it easy on the bike until the first service is done.
So based on my current average fuel consumption it means with the 18.8L main tank and the 6.5L Camel tanks the range (before running out completely) is pretty much 500km.  Thats pretty respectable!

Note:  You will need to remove both sides of front fairing and raise the tank to gain access underneath.  So when you do an install try to do so with an almost empty tank to make it a little easier to lift up and support.

Also I still need to cut a small section off the end of the chain guard, as per the instructions.  You'll see why this is needed once the tank is installed.

How does this tank connect to the main tank or does in not?  In the blurb on their website it says this tank empties first then the main tank. How is this managed?

It is connected to the main tank and does empty first as their blurb says.

On installation the original Honda breather tube is disconnected from the underside of the main tank (once you remove the fairing and lift the tank up to gain access).   There is a pretty good You-Tube video of Cory's website that covers pretty much everything installation wise.
The fuel feed line from the bottom of the Camel tank is extended and connected to the metal breather fitting on the underside of the Honda tank.
The Camel Tank breather (at the top of the tank) is extended to exit where all the other breather tubes exit low down on the left of the bike. 
Incidentally the Camel tank breather has a gravity type 'roll over' valve fitted, so if the tank is full and the bike tips over the valve will shut and prevent fuel draining out via the Camel tank breather tube.

When the engine is drawing fuel it still draws it from the original factory fitted fuel feed line.
As the level tries to drop in the OEM tank a partial vacuum tries to form, but as the breather is connected to the fuel feed line from the Camel tank, the main tank draws fuel into itself by the original breather fitting thus equalising the pressure and topping up the main tank. 
The Camel tank is permanently connected to the main tank.   Therefor it is the first tank to be emptied.  During the time the 6.5L Camel tank is bing used you see full on the bikes fuel gauge at all times.  As soon as you see the fuel gauge drop, just one bar from full, you know that the Camel Tank fuel has been used up and the main tank is now drawing air through it as it depletes its own fuel level toward empty.  The OEM fuel gauge always gives a trues reading of the fuel in the main tank.
The only way you have of gauging how much fuel remains in the Camel Tank is to open its cap and look in.

A video installation guide for our Camel Tank ATR auxiliary fuel tank on the Honda Africa Twin.

The ATR Camel Tank add s 6.5L (1.7gal) to the CRF1000L's fuel capacity for piece of mind when you're exploring the backcountry, on an around the world trip or just blasting down the highway. The ATR is compatible with many popular hard pannier systems!

The install looks a little more complicated than it is in reality.  The hardest part was stripping the front faring off and raising the tank.  Its all explained in the video.

Tip:  When you have removed the front fairing add a little silicone to the fairing mounting rubbers.  Helps them go on and come off more easily in the future.
Also, when removing the small plastic button type clips, push the centre pin in about 5mm until it naturally stops. Don't push the pin in too far or it will either pop out completely and be lost inside the front of the bike, or if it is pushed in too far, but doesn't pop out the back, it still won't allow you to pull the button/clip out.

Thanks for that detailed explanation, it has enabled me to fully understand how this all works and fits together. Looks good.

This is my next farkle for my AT. 25L capacity is what I liked about the Varadero. Having 25L on the AT, plus the upgraded rear suspension and the DCT model now makes for my perfect adventure touring bike.

Once Camel have completed the brackets for my Givi I'm in.
