2008 Xl1000 Headlights

So I was walking towards my bike the other day whilst it was running and noticed only the right side headlight was on. For the life of me I can't remember if that's normal or should the left be on as well. Left comes on when I hit the passing high beam switch. Any info appreciated.

both lights must (normally) work if you have H4. first have a look on your bulb, they are not eternal , and perhaps low beam filament is out ...
