Original rear suspension triangles meassurements SD01
« on: October 26, 2021, 09:55:03 »
Hello
I bought a new (to me) Varadero SD01 in the spring. I feel that it is much higher in the rear than my old SD01.
Do any of you guys know the meassurements of the original rear suspension triangles? Then i could check if they have been changed by the former owner.
He was a rather tall guy, but at 185 cm and 105 kg i'm not normally seing issues with bikes being to tall. Every time I put it on the side stand i worry about the bike tipping over. I never had that with my old SD01.
Also, it have been fittet with a Wilbers rear suspension unit - will that change the height?

Best regards
Carsten

The rear suspension unit can make a significant difference to the ride height (and lean angle when on the side stand).

Does the wilbers unit have a remote preload adjustment or does it use the "C spanner" for pre load adjustment ?

There is a preload adjuster.

Have you adjusted and set the pre-load as per the  wilbers instructions ?

I have not touched the pre-load due to lack of knowledge on the subjeckt. The prev. owner (about same weight as me) was the kind of guy who had everything done at his mechanic, so I hoped that setting was ok. I have to find out the precise model of Wilbers suspension I have and get some settings-info on that.

The pre-load adjustment method should not change for different suspension units.

The Carby Varadero has a total rear suspension travel  of 155mm.

The static sag should be 10-15% which is 15.5mm to 23.25mm

The dynamic sag should be 30% which is 46.5mm

To measure and/or adjust these values you will need a centre stand (or jack) and a friend to help you

Place the bike on the centre stand or jack it up so that the back wheel is off the ground.  Record dimension A as per the attached image

Lower the bike so both wheels are on the ground and the bike is upright with no one sitting on it. Record dimension B as per the attached image

Sit on the bike with the bike upright and both feet off the ground . Record dimension C as per the attached image

Static sag = A - B

Dynamic sag = A - C

Adjust the pre-load accordingly if the values are incorrect.

strange  har_scratch seems Wilbers have no shock for this bike with eccentric preload control ...

It's available in the "Options" for most absorbers but not shown in the Images

I have a 2008 SD02 with Wilbers. The bike "grew" a few cm after fitting the shock.
The same did my former SD02.
I didn't touch the preload.
It's made after our specifications.
Fat driver, tall pillion and too much luggage  ;D

I haven't done anything with the side stand, but I must be aware when parking.
See you deep in a German forest ;)

Hi again

Been away from the bike for a while, so now I've got to meassure.

The dimensions between the holes on my suspension triangle is 65x65x85
Could any of you guys with a standard suspension triangle supply the dimension of yours, for comparison?

Thanks
/Carsten

Thanks Zebulon

There's only small differences, but of course 5 mm on the triangle could mean a lot to the height.
Didn't think of meassuring the Dog bone.
