Headlight deflection stickers
« on: August 05, 2014, 18:54:01 »
Howdy,

So I will take the Vara to the continent for the first time. As I can be in Dover in around 2 hours, a nice weekend trip with the missus.

Did anybody care about the headlight deflection stickers when they went over to the continent? If so, where to put them?

Same for the continental folks on here who came to the UK.

Thanks!

To be honest I've never bothered with the bike or the car when I go to the UK…
There's so many cars with badly agjusted headlights on the road, no-one seems to notice

Just back from there last week and I never botherd. Even with some night time driving no one else seemed botherd by my lights on the Varedero.

Yes I know the stickers, I always put them on my car when I go to Europe (and I go quite often). I just don't know where to put them on the Varadero headlights, as all the instructions are for cars.

To be honest, my headlight is always well aligned, I make sure it is. But I heard that French cops can be picky and my headlight bulbs are yellow on top of that (ironically, now illegal in France).

I bought stickers for my trip but read the instructions, which says NOT to use them on halogen lights. I carried them in case of problems but with a lot of night riding was never flashed. If you are heavily loaded just check and drop with the adjuster knob if you think it needs it. Stickers as back up if the Gendames get funny. " Officier, je suis desolait!"
I'm pretty sure there's no bias on motorbike lights anyway; unlike cars but I wouldn't want to argue the point with strange cops.

My old (UK based) Vara somehow ended up with a RHD (European) Headlight unit.

I couldn't tell the difference and it went through several Annual MOT tests before it was noticed. In order to get it through the annual test I had to put a small piece of tape on one side of the lens.

I don't think that many people would be able to tell the difference between a RHD and LHD unit. If you are going to ride in the dark it might be worth adjusting the headlight to shine towards the right for your own benefit as much as for drivers coming the other way.

OK, will have a pair of stickers in the top box just in case.

More interesting is a French law I found that says headlights can actually be yellow, which means I could keep my bulbs in there.

Can anybody French speaking please confirm if I understand correctly the first paragraph of article r313-3 of the code de. la route?

From Google translate

Adaptive Front Lighting System.

Any motor vehicle may be equipped with an adaptive front lighting system to adapt to environmental conditions and parameters for the vehicle.

The Adaptive Front Lighting system is a light emitting or fixed and steerable beams with differing characteristics for automatic adaptation to variable use low beam characteristics and circumstances, if any, high-beam device. Operation is automatic without driver of the vehicle.

The Adaptive Front lighting system consists of the simultaneous operation or not, balanced or not, fires defined in Articles R. 313-2, R. 313-3, R. 313-4 and R. 313-8.

If the adaptive front lighting system is neutralized, the lights referred to in Articles R. 313-2, R. 313-3, R. 313-4 R. 313-8 shall each perform their basic function.

I don't know in France, but down here it is illegal. Even if it was legal until 1999 (some 40 years after new vehicles came all with white bulbs).

Anyway, I don't think any foreign vehicle has any problem with that: any police agent will assume that it is legal in its country of origin.
