East Coast for beginners
« on: September 06, 2014, 19:49:08 »
Hi Guys,

Thursday dawned misty and very' late summer, Autumn round the corner ish'  [like, for the non English]
Then outside became warm and the promised sunshine started to break through and my friend, the plumber, texted to say it was 'sunny' at the coast. He would be calling, on the Triumph, soon.
We took a windy country route through the 'Howardian Hills' at the back [north] of Garrowby Hill to a cafe in the trees at the junction of the Driffield/Malton-Stamford Bridge/Scarbrough road near Fimber, where the Sea Spray cafe is another haunt for bikers.
After we left I thought about photographs; sorry.

To the coast on an unusually fine afternoon. Raven Hall is a refined spot at Ravenscar, 20 kms [13 miles] 'round' Robin Hood's Bay from Whitby. In the mist, if you look carefully, you can see Robin Hood's Bay, the village, across The Bay; got it?
On the escarpment, now collapsed and overgrown, 'allum' was mined from the fifteenth century and loaded onto sailing ships by cart. This was exchanged for the 'nightsoil' [urine] of London, all used in the dyeing industry to make fabulous red[using the allum] for the royal and rich. It was a hanging offence for 'common' people to wear it. The urine, of course was also used in the manufacture of gunpowder. Down on the foreshore. at low tide, the 'wheelings' of the carts can be seen worn into the rock.

Refined gentlefolk allowed photographs of their 'cream tea' as the groundsman mowed the croquet lawn and putting green.
The view down the cliffs is impressive, if you have good eyes, or binoculars, you can often see seals here.
A brisk 'up & down' windy run round to Whitby to get crabs for tea. A very friendly little sandpiper [Calidris minuta, I think] walked up and down the wall until I produced the camera, at which point he shot down to the shore showing off beautiful markings that were gone before the 'not-so -smart-phone' could get up to speed.
This time in Whitby is called 'The Golden Hour' weather fine or not. I'll try to post a better picture from Facebook.
This is one of your planned VUK 'outings'. I hope the weather is as kind to you and try the seafood.

Here are the concluding pictures.
Lastly is a strange beast. I normally buy 'whole' crabs and 'do' them myself but the 'dressed' [prepared] ones looked and in fact were deliciously sweet and flavoursome and it would be late, by the time I reached home but afterwards, as I prepared to 'compost the remains, I discovered; look closely, this is a plastic crab!
Is this a 'Euro nonsense' imposed on us, or a preparing process which wrecks the 'original'?
I wonder if some 'jobsworth' thinks that proper shells might be somehow unhygienic....
I really am old; ...perhaps it's a METRIC shell, Bernard?

I give up. Too much time wasted trying to 'share'pictures on stupid Facebook. I found and posted the 'Golden Hour' picture to my timeline. Despite 'joining' the Varadero site/group, I am unable to find them in my 'Friends', maybe I'm on probation. Anyway, it's worth a look if you can find my page. It's so rarely sunny there; Whitby, that is.

Anyone seeing this, just through the bridge opening to the left, is the wall where the sandpiper was.

Whilst I'm on a roll, here's another link you may like. Is this an engineering photo? Discuss.

@Pokemi It used to sound like "A coo gah" when I watched it on TV Catalan. "Come On Down"

Thanks for the pictures and the chemistry lesson!  ;)

I know I must come back to Yorkshire  :)

Questions: I can see no bike in the FB links, I don't know what that crab is, and there's no Catalan word coming to mi mind that sound like "A coo gah"  ???

Regards,

Josep
