one possibility would be that the old  battery somehow short-circuited

Hi sorry to hear you're havin trouble with drainage.  I have had problems with exploding varadero due to stator windings which first appeared as draining battery for no reason. Since then and new stator a melted connector just above the new stator caused rectifier frying. Again symptoms were failing battery.  I would check the connector it's in the wiring loom boot just above the alternator/ stator cover. Also check your indicator switch as if there is too much wd40 grease in there it causes resistance to build up draining the battery and causing slow activation of indicators. Just flush it out with plenty of electrical cleaner/ brake cleaner. Cheers oh and speedo doing weird things is symptom of low voltage battery, in my opinion. Funny but from my experiences I have learned that more not less accessories ease the work of the rectifier not increase it, most of the time.. In tick over traffic queue situations the load is high but the engine is not needing the voltage to be rectified as the revs aren't high so switching accessories off here is the rule. Thanks and good luck! Don't give up

Karinda's battery (eh, from her bike) died on us last Friday, left her abandonned at a motorway service station at midnight...  ;D ::)

We are going to try the Motobatt battery but on post order its out of stock everywhere!
Price is allright I recon... around € 65-€ 70 ready to install, plug & play.

Will try some local dealers this week.
