Hey all.

Now that several have AT's in their possession and are putting some kilometers on them, how about posting some pics of the bikes in action.

I'll start the ball rolling, even though I don't own one. But I did test ride one over a weekend.

I took my AT out for it's first gravel ride yesterday.  The bike is easier to ride on gravel than my old CT, less weight, lower centre of gravity and better dirt bike geometry.

I rode over the local hills and then out east to southern Wairarapa, bottom east corner of the North Island of NZ.  It has these wonderful gravel roads, and sometimes these roads cut through farmland and turn into routes for a little bit. I had to clean my bike when I got back, was covered in cow and sheep shit.

Over the hill on the hill

Then head east over some more hills. Now starting to get into the back blocks

The day was fine, if not cool for this time of year, so I left early and went for a ride to the coast and back today.

First a 2 hour ride to a place on the south east coast of the North Island, Castle Point (Famous for it's lighthouse but I didn't take a photo of that!). This one is looking up the coast towards where I am riding to.

About half an hour up the coast
(https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-WzzQxbg/1/L/i-WzzQxbg-L.jpg)

And looking back down the coast on my return trip. The weather had warmed up by this stage.

The beauty of this ride is there are two hours of lovely twisty tarmac to get to the start of the coastal ride and then an hour of gravel to have fun with up and down the coast.

Cheers from sunny NZ.

Went out riding again over the weekend. Some shots of various places. On Saturday I rode with a friend who had just bought a new 701 Husqvarna. He wanted to find some gravel roads so I introduced him to one of my local favourites. We stopped at a friend's farm on the warm for a cup of tea.

On Sunday I did a short ride to a look out just north of Wellington looking up the west coast.

He likes the 701. He's hoping the problems of the 690 are gone, the 701 model has a revised (new) engine in it compared to the 690.  Time will tell if this is the case...

I took the At out for another day excursion yesterday (Sunday). It was a crisp autumn (fall) day, fine with temperatures from 8-13 degrees.

Headed over the local range into the Wairarapa and then into the eastern Wairarapa hills where one finds good twisty tarmac roads and lots of gravel routes to play around on.

I left early for a Sunday morning. First bit is easy.

On yesterday's ride I left the pressure as for tarmac. Made for some slippery riding but I had a lot of tarmac riding to do once off the end of the gravel and with no pump I prefer the firmer tire on tarmac and can manage the hard tire on gravel.

Enjoyed your picture in the other thread, looked cold.

Some more action from yesterday.

I headed out to my favourite gravel route to test out my new rear suspension. As you can see from my video above of my ride over the Rimutaka Hill road, the bike rides really well on tarmac. This partly because the new suspension both reduces rear sag, but also raises the rear height a little, meaning the front rake is reduced. The difference over stock on tarmac is outstanding. The front turns in easier and more quickly and the rear is planted with great feel and feedback.

So, with tarmac sorted, what about gravel? Shortening of the front rake angle doesn't normally bode well for gravel riding and so it proved to be the case. My challenge is I have set up the bike for my weight plus a small top box with zero pre-load. On gravel the front end was a little twitchy. I suspect softening tire pressure (which I didn't do yesterday) will help quite a bit. However, since I have set the bike up for two up adventure riding, the rake will self adjust once I have my wife on the back. Oh dear that doesn't read well does it, wife as ballast  VCIF_a055 .

A short video of my first tentative ride on gravel post the suspension upgrade...

Took out my AT for a ride in the cold wet rain on some slippery gravel roads yesterday. Had to turn my traction control off just to maintain decent engine revs.

The rear suspension performed well on the rutted roads. One of the group's riders sustained a fence staple in the rear tire of his DR650, which caused the rest of us to wait about 30 minutes while the rear tube was replaced. Bike needs a good clean now!

I went for a 560km ride on Saturday. On the way back I did a quick ride up a local hill road that used to be used by boy racers. There is now a low speed limit on it, but for the life of me I couldn't remember what it was on Saturday... ;D

Headed out for a cold ride yesterday with Antonia on the back. Nice clear day but temps were 6-10C for most of the ride. Ok for me, but Antonia feels the cold even with all the gear on.

Headed to a place called Lake Ferry, right on the southern coast of the North Island.

Recently I did a four day ride up the East Coast of the North Island from where I live (at the bottom of the North Island), around the East Cape and back home. I took my AT and my friend was on his DL650 (with spoke wheels).

Some pics from that ride follow.
It was a wet, cold windy day when we left home

The day was cold, the southerly storm the day before left a trail of snow on the ranges, unusual for this time of year (mid October)(https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-8XKqKNN/0/bd13c291/M/i-8XKqKNN-M.jpg)My riding buddy, Dan. Along the way we stopped off to look at some waterfalls. I had previous ridden this route a few times but never bothered to do the short detour to look at this.

The next day we rode from Gisborne to Kawerua around the East Cape, our main target for the trip. The East Cape of NZ is one of our iconic rides, if any of you ever manage to come to NZ, you should try and ride this route
See this link - https://goo.gl/maps/Pnyx8QWETZk

With a clear night the day started out cool but cloudless. We had lots of views like this
(https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-NXfsR8b/0/8561e859/L/i-NXfsR8b-L.jpg)

Tologa Bay was our first stop. I had never walked the length of this old wharf before, an iconic piece of NZ history (no long used but remains as a tourist attraction)

Not long before our trip there had been a huge winter storm in the region. The area is well known for its pine forest plantations and logging. The storm was a lot of forest detritus left over from logging down the rivers and these ended up on the local beaches. There is now a lot of effort going into removing the rubbish
(https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-p4HzdPH/0/6d12967d/L/i-p4HzdPH-L.jpg)

It is a long walk out and back
(https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-gQNdswx/0/c866411f/XL/i-gQNdswx-XL.jpg)

More views
(https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-NPGgqCN/0/603bd9ed/XL/i-NPGgqCN-XL.jpg)

Nice cafes on the way (named after the road number, route 35)

Eventually we got to near the most eastern point of NZ

Having reached the most eastern point we turn our bikes north headed up the coast.

This white church is in the middle of no where and stands all alone, a stark silhouette against the rugged coast line
(https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-hxZS6rG/1/c3718c82/L/i-hxZS6rG-L.jpg)

Further up the coast, it is 380 km of twisty roads

Last weekend I had some Australian visitors in my area and I offered to show them around my local patch. They had a route in mind and I took the lead so they could concentrate and riding and looking.

First up was a spot to see the landscape we would be riding to. The far right and the far left of this picture(https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-5xcGrSm/1/ec03fef8/XL/i-5xcGrSm-XL.jpg)

The far right is Cape Palliser, where the mountains reach the sea at the southern most tip of the North Island of NZ. Once there you can walk up 183 steps to the lighthouse and get some good views.

Then we headed back the way we came and further up the range in the top photo (left hand side of the picture) to carve up some gravel roads and ride some twisty tarmac. The views on the way back were good too.
