Tyre needed now!!!!
« on: August 22, 2013, 21:19:40 »
We're on a biketour in France (around) Nice, and we need tyres for a Crosstourer and a Varadro!
We'd like to change them tomorrow or at last saturday morning on the way home, maybe in Italy.
Please  send places, where we can change our tyres!

Maybe a silly remark, but it would have been wise to leave home with good tires... Unless... did you have a puncture?

Dear Bernard,

First of all, we got home all back in safe.
Thanks for the good advice, but look at the facts:
We left home with 8 bikes, 6 had Michelin Anakee 3, and 2 had Pirelli Scorpions.
Each run a few thousands of kilometers.
The two Pirellis had a short tour to Austria and Slovakia, and a longer to Bosnia and Montenegro, whit a summ of 3500 kilometers.
On my Varadero I changed each tyre set at 12.000 km (I used 7 sets. Bridgestone, Metzeler, Michelin...)
We planed to take 4500 km in this tour (Hungary, Slovenia, Austria, Italy, France), so We should get home with tires run maximum 8500 kilometers.

And gess what? Those Pirellis couldn't run even 6500 kilometers!!!

Here's a picture of the Pirelli Scorpion at the end of its life:

In my trips throughout W Europe, I only had to change tyres twice:

First, scheduled, in Trier (Germany), where the guys showed a "not-so-typical-German" style by installing the tyre they pleased, instead of the one I had ordered (BTW that's something my Catalan dealer would not do).
Second, unexpectedly, in Wales. This time I installed the Pilot Road they had in the workshop; this tyre certainly did its job well until it wore out too soon.

So, as far as I can tell, I don't worry about tyres. As I ride in Europe, I believe that in case of need, I'll find something suitable in the neighbourhood.

Greetings,

Josep

I can confirm. We had exactly the same experience.

The tyre was OK when leaving home with 8.000 km on the odo. After 300km, still OK. Another 300 km later, it was like this !

The Scorpion is apparently known to wear out very fast at the end of his life. To be checked frequently...

Fitted Annakee III now.

OK valid reason! I don't like Pirelli's either. Got the MT90 fitted under my XLV, the other XLV is on Michelin Sirac so I have a good comparising right now...

Never again Pirelli.  >:(

Greetings,

Josep,

you drive a not "german registered" dero. So you have no problems in choosing your tyres. If you register your bike in germany, as mine, you have some more regulations to obey (unfortunatley).

Best regards
Rainer

Are their regulations in Germany  that dictate what tyres you,can use on your Varadero?

Hi Rainer,

this is an intertesting point.

IIRR, I was recommended by Honda just two different kind of tyres for my Vara. But this was nine years ago, and even then, there were some other ones that I considered better (well, most anything is better than a TrailWing  8) ). Who's got a list of the "legal" tyres for a Vara?

I remember reading that German TÜV checks whether front and rear tyres are the same make and model. I'd say that our ITV checks only the tyre size, but I am not 100% sure about that.
IMHO, front and rear tyre needn't be the same. For instance, I was quite happy with front TrailWing, regardless of what I used rear; and I was quite unhappy with front Tourance (and I read here bad experiences with a front TrailAttack). Of course, all tyres (front and rear) I use are radial.

Back to rear Scorpions, a friend of mine said he was very happy with this one's performance, but he didn't buy a second unit because it lasted too little.

Regards,

Josep

@ Tank,

yes there are regulations in DEU, which allows you or not to use tyres on your dero. These regulation are only valid, if your motorbike is registered in DEU, because they are passed by the DEU Federal Office for Motor Traffic.

It´s difficult and not easy to explain, it depends on the year of manufacture if you need a clearance of the motorbike producer or tyre producer. Older motorcycles have to use tyres in the right dimension of special tyre producers as written in the registration certificate ....

But don´t worry about, as I wrote it´s only valid for DEU registered motorbikes.

In our DEU Varadero board we had this discussion and believe me, even we have our problems with this issue.

@ JosefM,

just to give you an example. My dero is from 2008. The original tyres had been Trail Wings, then I used Battle Wings. These tyres are allowed without any other clearances because written in the COC.

Now I use Heidenau K60 Scout. Therefore I need a clearance from the tyre producer, which I have. By the way, the K60 Scout is a bias belt tyre.

Older motorbikes (older than built in 2007 - but not sure) have witten in the papers (registration document) not only the dimesion (e.g. 150/79 R 17 69H) but as well the brand (e.g. bridgestone). So they are only allowed to use these combination as written in the reg-doc. But there is always a way out, if you go to the DEU TÜV and get the permission to use other tyres, if the DEU TÜV accept your proposal.

But once again, these are DEU regulations. Have no idea of Spanish, British or other European regulations.

Regards
Rainer

PS: One of the DEU varadero board admins - ManfredK - who is posting as well her in this international forum is s.b. well based on these facts.

There are no such regulations in The Netherlands for obligate brand or type of tires towards a certain specific motorvehicle. Except for the minimum profile remaining. You will be fined if it is below the allowed tolerance; or be forced to change tires if the tires are worn (to) far beyond the point of no return...  :o
