Traction Control Modes - CRF1000L

Traction Control Modes

What works for you?

Setting 3 (3 dashes): The fuel injection system will cut back power when hitting a small bumps at a fast pace. In this mode you find it doing it pretty much any time you ride in any conditions. It can get irritating.

Setting 2 (2 dashes): The fuel injection system will cut back power when hitting larger bumps at a fast pace. It's can still be annoying.

Setting 1 (1 dash): The fuel injection system will not cut back power except in extreme circumstances. This is the setting of choice for most riders.

Setting OFF:  There is no traction control!  No indication in the TC, window except the TC icon (top right) will have a diagonal line crossed through it.

During those last extremely hot days, I rode without TC, but I'm surprised by your claims, even on 3 it took control only once within 4 months and I found it to be pretty transparent !

I put the modes and comments together based on feedback posted on other forums and thought it might be a worthwhile topic to discuss here at the HAR-Forum.

I've read, on other Forums that TC3 will cut it often in many normal riding situations. I've also seen a number of people agreeing and commenting that they prefer to ride on 1 for that reason.  Of course TC activity will be governed rate of acceleration and how uneven/wet the riding surface is, just a hint of a skip on a bump (metal manhole cover is a common cause), with the throttle pinned might set TC off, less so in 1 than 3.

I'll let you know when I actually have my Africa Twin to play with.  Right now I'm 345km off the East coast of Canada.  As soon as I get home I will carry out some tests.

Well, whilst riding on my AT DCT (on TC default 3 setting) I can say that not once have I noticed TC kicking in during normal riding in dry conditions.
Done just over 1000kms now.   Due its initial service.
I'll see how it goes when its had its first service and I open it right up.

If TC does not kick in mode III you are not using the bike properly  ::)

Mine does wheelie in quick start quite often  VCIF_ThumbUp

Less than 1000km and before its first service.  Is there a proper way then?  I'm new to big bikes. They scare me a little. ;)

In my view, the only proper way is to ride the bike safely is within your limits and in a way that you are comfortable with. Pushing it too hard too soon is a good way to learn by the school of hard knocks.

I still have troubles getting traction control to kick in while in mode III when riding on tarmac. And that is with the throttle full open.  I can make it happen if I accelerate away from stopped while turning, but not in a straight line.

Thanks for the balanced feedback based on your experience

Once I get the first service out of the way, with fresh oil and filters, I'll be able to play around a little more ;)

Well, I got the first service completed but sadly didn't have much time to ride the bike as I have had to head off to work for a while.
