I know what I used to get out of my 2007 Vara, around 5.2L/100km.  I've been riding my new Crosstourer (2013 model year) and I've discovered the only down side to the Crosstourer over my old Vara - it consumes more fuel.  I'm averaging 5.9L/100km, but mind you it's very hilly where I live so I have not yet done a long trip.  I expect the consumption to improve.

Zebulon............I think thats the whole trouble, they changed to much and now this DCT model is going to take a few years of development to better the existing fuel range.

Fuelcapacity hasn't changed on the Varadero's throughout its almost 14 years of production... And feul consumption has only improved comparing with a carb feuled Mk1 from 1998... ;)

I've only had my 2008 Varadero for a few months and never really had it out on long, long days. I'd put on about 1700 kilometres in the last two months but only in short 100-200 kilometre afternoon rides. Today I went for an 800 kilometre ride and I was blown away by the fuel economy - one tank (4.2 l/100km - 318KM) and one tank (4.19 l/100km - 377.7).

If I get get that level of fuel economy consistently that means the range to empty is well over 500 kilometres - that is ridiculously good. Is it just because I had long open stretches and high mountain air? I'm not complaining but the fuel economy seems pretty high for such a big bike (56 mpg).

Wanted to bump this 'old' topic, as I'm surprised...
I have a 2008 Varadero and am able to drive +/- 300km and then the reserve-warning light shows...

Am I that terrible in driving the Varadero?
If I would be able to get to 400km that would seem almost magical...

The varadero is at this moment completely original...

My '12 is from the same model series as your '08 and 400+ km on one fuel tank are no exceptions. My record with this bike was 528km on one tank filling, refuelled with 27L (I always thought that the mightly Dero could only swallow 25L, lol, but must admit that the fuel light was almost blinding me for quit some time). That never happened again. Note... I have bought the bike as new (with zero km) and from the beginning, I only refuel with high octane fuel (98+ or higher, if available), unless there is nothing else available than +95. And I am not a slow rider ;) Maybe more a kind of 'steady' rider? Got electronic cruise control on the bike since last autumn, wonder if that will influence the fuel consumption. Don't really think so, because of my 'steady right wrist', lol.

Tire pressure and tire brand (but also chainwear and maintenance) can also have an influence on fuel consumption, f.e. I ride on Conti Trail Attack, with an slightly higher pressure than advised from the manufacturer (Continental): 2,4 B front, 2,8 rear.

I'm going bananas here... if I were able to hit 400km every time I'd be happy already...

Does anyone have an idea why my 2008 versions uses that more gasoline?
Perhaps best to get him to a tuner to see if everything is running alright?

to only get 300 kms before the reserve light comes on with a 25 litre tank on a 2008 Varadero suggests something is not quite right.

to only get 300 kms before the reserve light comes on with a 25 litre tank on a 2008 Varadero suggests something is not quite right.

Spirited riding on roads with frequent speed changes & braking could result in 370km before the light comes on at approx 20L used.

What Koeno (and others) don't tell us is how much fuel it takes to refill the tank once the light has come on !

The low fuel level detector is a thermistor that detects when it is not longer submerged (or being splashed ) by fuel. It doesn't take much imagination to realise that its not going to be that accurate or repeatable.

most of the time that will be 20-21l
When I first got the Varadero, I calculated a few times and I got about 6.5-7l / 100km.
