Spokes had enough..
« on: August 27, 2017, 13:51:58 »
Got back home from nine days gravel tour in Northeast Lapland, over 4000 km on Michelin Anakee Wild's.. Washed the bike next day and started to change the rear tyre, next weekend trip less than two week's away..

Did not bother to proceed with the tyre, as I found out that I'm missing at least 11 spokes.. Sad thing is that apparently there are no spoke set available in Europe, I was promised delivery at 9th september at the soonest (!). Did not found anything else than Honda OEM..

Grr..

Loosing 11 spokes is a lot.
Didn´t you check the spokes a) before your travel and b) during your travel (at the end of a day)?

I do it and never had any trouble with my spokes at a Super Tenere, although the Super Tenere has as well some problems with.

You must have been riding pretty heavily.

I got my rim and spokes bend when needed to jump over a hole in road at Albania, but none got broken...
Current: HONDA CRF1000L Tricolor DCT
Honda NC700X DCT

I checked them before I left, as I put on new tyre. All spokes were good. Looked around the bike briefly every morning, but did not notice anything (i did not knock the spokes). I think I heard spokes rattling on the day I got home.. The spokes of front wheel are good (by sound).

On fourth day I did broke the left footpeg at kaakkurikonelo, never again SW Motech pegs (second time this happened..)! I do stand on pegs a lot, and the peg was cleanly cut off.. Minor jump, but with some speed.. Managed to patch the peg back to bike, but for the rest of the trip, no standing on the pegs..

There are some really stony roads up there, but earlier I have not had anything like this (5th summer with my CT). In this trip, Varadero and BMuu F800GS did the same route without any problems. I am heavy, and we were not slow.. But up there you are not taking any foolish risks, those areas are rather remote (not even cell coverage..), so the speed has to remain sensible. But we did carry all the gear with us all the time.

Last year I had one spoke missing at Naruska (the same region), spotted it the same day, but nothing else. Got home and changed one spoke (actually not me, but somebody who does it for living...). On that trip, there were a few bikes with bent rims and some broken tyres.., so I though I had hitted a rock or something. In my opinion, Honda rim is very good and sturdy, comparing for example to KTM..

The spokes in that link are available in September.. Delivered here in Finland approx. on 9th. I had to cancel my trip next weekend.

If I understand your posting the right way, you have been travelling with the Crosstourer? Is that correct?

If so... that's hardly not the bike designed for jumps etcetera... The CRF1000 Africa Twin would be suited (far) better...

I have the spokes of my old XLV750R's redone at an specialist, he replaced the spokes by thicker stainless steel ones. Don't you have f.e. a motorcross specialist somewhere in your area? They should be able to replace the spokes by aftermarked ones.

You got it right, DCT Crosstourer  it is.. I am not saying that I am jumping around with it, 300kg Honda is not motocross bike.. I don't have Africa Twin, I am just using the bike I have. But I really like my bike, especially the engine, it had taken me places and back.. just suprised to see so many spokes broken at the same time without any major incident, that's all. The fault with footpeg goes to SW-Motech fault, I really think that they have a really stupid structure. I've purchased Pivot Pegz, they should be good (but the price..!).
I have been driving gravel roads with my bikes for over 30 years, and CT is good for most part of my needs.. Just needing new set of spokes :-)

Crosstourer have quite unigue spokes, I could not find any ready aftermarket set. There is a Finnish company that can do the spokes for me, as I can provide a few spokes for model (CT has two kind of spokes at rear wheel). They promised to deliver at the end of September.

Maybe I'll go for them at winter, for extra set.

Problem must be the spokes in combination with the tubeless tires? And yes, the CT is a wonderfull long range touringbike with its sublime V4 engine, agree on that.
Had a chat with my Honda agent yesterday, spokes are available (like Gilles states above in France) in the Netherlands within 24hrs after ordering.

I guess it's the shape (they have certain angled design) and length of the spokes. Northwest Honda (UK) promises to deliver at 9th, and Finnish Honda importer is not willing to promise exact date but expects to have them delivered at 14th. Funny, they both (and several other Finnish dealers) informed me that there is no stock available in Europe..

Finnish importer took interest on the case, let's see what comes out of it.
Hope to get spokes soon, stupid reason to be without a ride for nearly a month! Here in Finland the warmer season is not too long..
