Varadero 144000 km service.
« on: July 19, 2017, 23:23:22 »
Or rather 145500 km  ;D

Started yesterday demounting the fuel tank, taking out the K&N air filter, cleaned it and put it aside for drying.

Today I took out the spark plugs and demounted the cylinder head covers to check the valve clearances. I was a little excited about the clearances, as there had been nothing to adjust the last two times I checked them.

But, again this time, nothing to adjust, all 8 valves was within the tolerance!

This means, through the bikes life, 145500 km, the 4 exhaust valves has been adjusted once, thinner shims on all four, at 74000 km (72000 km service), the inlet valves has never been adjusted!!!

Hi Bønne,

That's great.

Hopefully the Vara will be good for another 144000kms :)

Hi Bønne,

I see no problems with additional 144000 kms.

Please have a look at the homepage of Varahannes, an Austrian Varaderofriend of mine,
http://varahannes.at/
At the moment he/his Varadero has 596339 kms on the odo.

Nor do I. But I had expected some adjustments now and then on the way, but until now there´s been very little to do  VCIF_ok

But I did in fact have a problem with the bike when home from VIM19, but that´s another (and long :D ), story, I´ll do another thread about that later.

Got the cylinder head covers in place again and two new spark plugs. Next step is to oil the K&N-filter and mount it, and the fuel tank, and then change the oil, oil filter and cooling water.

And then I´ve ordered two new Anakee II (my 7th. set ;D ), so when they arrive, I´ll change them, check the brakes and change the brake fluid at the same time.

I'm sure you know already, but watch you don't trap the breather pipe.  Seem to recall a few Varas ending up with 'smaller' tanks as they were sucked in by the fuel pump due to the breather being crimped! :(

Yes, I´m aware of that, but thanks anyway  ;D

Got the K&N-filter oiled today, but when going to mount it, I discovered that the filter gasket was in a bad condition and broke into pieces when trying to mount it. It was quite spongy and sticky, seems to be made of a non oil resistant rubber material. Makes sense :o, when the filter is intended for oiling ::)

So, I made a new gasket out of a 3mm rubber sheet that I had in stock:

And got the filter in place:

Mounted the fuel tank and filled up the PD-oiler that I mounted right before the VIM19 trip, before putting the seat in place again:

Replaced the coolant, engine oil and oil filter, so now I´m just waiting for the tires to arrive, so I can get the last things done.

It again proves that the Varadero (and its engine) is really rocksolid! Tnx for sharing. Still 100.000 to go on my current Mighty White before I reach your impressive mileage ;)
Looking at the reserves on the VFR1200X Crosstourer's engine, and how that bike is build, I expect high mileage bikes to appear soon in the near future.

Would be interesting on that aspect what the new CRF1000F Africa Twin is going to do, since its a complete different engine lay-out. Large mileages (up to 500.000 km) are no exception on the 'old' XRV650/750 Africa Twin, including the 600 Transalp from which its engine was derivated...  ;D

Mileage is a phrase of saying, eg my current mileage is 7200 km. That's my story and I'm sticking to it :P  ;D

I couldn't think of a metric equivalent or find one searching on the internet and all the main dictionaries I looked at defined "Mileage" as a specific term relating to Miles and not a generic term for distance.

Perhaps there is a need to create a new word, any suggestions ?
