Fit rear wheel after removal
« on: July 13, 2017, 00:36:43 »
Its not enough clearence while I'm trying to fit the rear wheel after tyre change as an example.

I can try it 30 times and takes 2-3 hours. Distances drop and get caught in chain tensioner, get the clearance between caliper and there is weight in the wheel aswell, levelling with one arm and try to get the centerpin in.

Do you have any advice how make this work in a easier way, and perhaps success after one try?

If on the centre stand.  I used to put a block of wood under the wheel to take the weight.

I use a small block of wood as a fulcrum and a plank with the tyre sitting on one end and me sitting on the other end.

It allows you to lift the wheel into position with your arms free to fit the pin.

The owner of the local bike tyre shop does it by hand and makes it look easier than it is.

Yes, a block/plank of wood, placed directly under the axle hole, with the right thickness so when the wheel is rolled up on it, you can stick the axle in without lifting the wheel. Then you can easy and quietly get the distances and brakepads in place while rolling the wheel forward into place. But, the block/plank must not be thicker than you can pul it out then the axle is in place.
Plan your ride, ride your plan.

I'm using wood and a crowbar.

The real problem is spacing between swingarm and fit: collar, wheel, collar, brake.
When aligning theres no room and perhaps 2mm overshot. Is it necessary to force swingarm both ends a little apart?

When trying to raise up the wheel against center, collar fells off and have to start over.

This is driving me nuts

Not necessary to force the swing arm legs apart.

When the tyre is on the wooden block try feeding the rod/axle through until it is just reaches the area where the collar/spacer is. Hold the spacer and push the axle through a little more. If the wheel is at the right height it should just slide through. I add a little grease to the axle rod to help it slide through.

Maybe try and visit someone locally and get them to offer some tips?  Its hard to describe in words.

I'm doing all this already. Even have a smaller rod from the other side to get all align. But it always takes 2 hours because its micrometer precision

I think swingarm has got pushed in by tightening and needs to get split again to correct value

Or maybe it´s the wheel that´s to wide, maybe there´s a bearing that´s not pressed correctly in place, or a wrong bearing is used. Or check the collars and dampers inside the sprocket flange.

Have you checked that the spacers are on the correct side as from what I remember one is wider than the other.

I can not say why you´ve had these problems, Magnus. But today I had my rear wheel dismounted, to fit a new tire, and I took some pictures and measurements.

As you can see on the next pictures, the wheel fits exactly into the swingarm.

So, when rolled up on a plank and into the swingarm, I could stick the axle right through and tighten the nut with the specified 93 Nm.
